Parliament approved a three-year extension to Egypt’s emergency law, in force since President Anwar Sadat was assassinated in 1981. The law enables authorities to hold detainees without charge for long periods and to try civilians in military courts, where defendants have fewer rights.

Parliament, where the ruling National Democratic Party has a majority, passed a resolution proposed by President Hosni Mubarak to renew the emergency law until May 31, 2006, parliamentary sources said.
