Death Penalty Upheld for Rapist-Murderer

A man convicted of raping and murdering his Brazilian roommate and then mutilating her body in an unsuccessful attempt to keep her from being identified was sentenced to death Monday.
Calvin Parker, 33, was convicted last summer in the August 2000 death of Patricia Gallego, who was studying English and working as a waitress. A jury had recommended that Parker receive the death penalty.
Superior Court Judge Michael Wellington denied a motion to reduce the sentence to life in prison without parole.
