More than 1,700 people have fled their villages in the Indian-held part of Kashmir after two days of heavy shelling and mortar fire across the cease-fire line dividing Indian and Pakistani forces, officials said.

“They have taken ... refuge in a school building at a safer place in view of heavy artillery shelling from across the border for the last couple of days,” a defense spokesman said.

He said heavy shelling began Sunday in Rajouri district, about 60 miles north of Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir state, but died down Tuesday.
