Hubble Takes a Peek at the Early Universe

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Hubble Space Telescope has looked 13 billion years back to the universe’s infancy, when stars finally began to shine, astronomers reported this week.

The signal of the end of the cosmic dark ages is the detection of about 30 faint red objects by the orbiting telescope, according to Haojing Yan of Arizona State University. Yan and his colleagues believe those objects are young star-forming galaxies seen when the universe was perhaps one-seventh its current size and less than 1 billion years old.
