Richardson Corrected Resume

From Associated Press

Former Tennessee State coach Nolan Richardson III, who resigned this week after bringing a handgun on campus, submitted a resume with an inaccuracy about his academic record before being hired.

“It was brought to our attention earlier this past fall 2002, that there was an inaccuracy,” Athletic Director Teresa Lawrence Phillips said Friday. “I received an e-mail from an internal source, but at that same time coach Richardson did go over to Human Resources ... and he made some corrections in his file.”

Richardson took steps to correct the error in October, along with a related entry in the university’s media guide. That resume and media guide said Richardson earned a bachelor’s degree from Langston University in 1987, while he actually graduated in 1995.

Freshman forward Stephen Briggs will return to the Massachusetts team Jan. 17 after he was dismissed for an unspecified rules violation in October.

“This has been a very difficult situation for everyone involved,” coach Steve Lappas said Friday. “Kids sometimes make mistakes.”
