Shutting Off Automatic Sprinklers Saves Water

Re “Southland Share of Water to Be Cut as Deal Collapses,” Jan. 1:

One way to save water is to turn off the automatical sprinkler systems along the freeways when it rains. Some homeowners are also guilty of such waste.

As to all the trees that seem to interfere with pedestrian traffic, why not provide some sort of a root barrier when the trees are planted? Granted, that won’t help existing trees, but it could certainly prevent out-of-control root growth as the trees age.
