Emperor Has Surgery for Prostate Cancer
Doctors at a Tokyo hospital operated on Emperor Akihito, who had prostate cancer, the Imperial Household Agency said. It provided no details.
Doctors who diagnosed the 69-year old emperor last month said they expected him to fully recover. Empress Michiko and the couple’s youngest child, Princess Sayako, were at the hospital during the operation. Akihito is expected to remain for about a month to recuperate.
His surgery marks the first time a Japanese emperor has received major medical treatment outside the Imperial Palace, which contains a hospital.
