Police Investigating Trucker’s License in Crash That Killed 5
Authorities were investigating Tuesday whether a truck driver accused of killing five people in a fiery crash was qualified to hold his commercial driver’s license.
Police were also investigating why Ejub Grcic was on the rural road before the Monday afternoon crash in Slippery Rock, Pa. They said his tractor-trailer was too heavy for the road, which has a 10-ton limit.
Authorities say Grcic, 54, ran a stop sign, killing a North Carolina family who were visiting relatives in the area.
Grcic was jailed Tuesday on five counts of homicide by vehicle, one count each of driving an overweight truck and driving a commercial vehicle without being able to communicate with authorities, and related motor vehicle offenses.
Police said Grcic, who lives in West Valley, Utah, and speaks Croatian, held a Utah commercial license.
An official said a driver must “be able to communicate with law enforcement and be able to read signs” to get a commercial license.
