The former superintendent of the Air Force Academy has been demoted after a sexual assault scandal at the school, the Air Force said Thursday night.

Lt. Gen. John R. Dallager, who was removed as superintendent in March, was demoted and will retire as a major general, a drop of one rank, Air Force spokesman Doug Thar said.

Dallager, who had planned to retire in June, will retire Sept. 1, Thar said. It was not immediately clear why his retirement was delayed or when the demotion took place.

“For purposes of his retirement he will be retired as a two-star general,” Thar said.

Dozens of female cadets have said they were assaulted by male cadets, and some say they were punished for reporting the attacks. News of the demotion came as an independent panel investigating the scandal met with victims and toured the academy on the eve of a public hearing.
