A ‘Love or Money’ gamble

If “For Love or Money’s” Rob Campos didn’t feel too badly about being rejected by Erin Brodie for $1 million, it turns out the woman he chose at the end of the dating show actually dropped him for a lot less than that.

As The Times reported, NBC’s fine-print rules said that the prize would be paid out over 40 years, or $25,000 annually, similar to one of the payment options for state lottery winners. Had Brodie chosen a lump-sum payment, NBC confirmed that she would have received $465,000, or less than half the stated total. Most other reality-show contests pay out the full prize immediately.

Given the option, Brodie agreed to a double-or-nothing proposition as the central figure in a sequel to the dating show, which begins Monday.
