U.S. Should Help Liberia

Share

Re “Quicksand in Liberia,” editorial, July 22:

I cringe in despair this summer as the government of the most powerful nation on Earth hesitates to heed the cries of desperate Liberians. Just as British troops helped bring salvation to Sierra Leone three years ago and French troops rescued Ivory Coast last year, so should the United States now act in recognition of its historic obligation to Liberia.

We have rightly sent 150,000 troops to free Iraqis and repel fascism in the Middle East. Why should we not commit up to 2,000 troops for similar purposes in Liberia, with the blessing of the United Nations and support of governments throughout Africa?
