Spelling Bewilderment

Share

In these times of war, bigotry and pestilence, it feels good to be able to experience wrath and asperity over small issues. And I wax wroth over the myopic and tyrannous impercipience of spelling bee officials who challenge children with words that are part of nobody’s lexicon.

Of the six sample spelling challenges cited in “Persistent Dallas Youth Wins Bee” (May 30), only two were listed in my dictionary. Woe betide the pusillanimous and apathetic who do not deign to censure those who impose such iniquitousness upon our children. “Voussoir”? “Tenebrosity”? Fie!
