Tiananmen Recalled With Lights of Dissent
More than 20,000 people demanded an end to one-party rule in China on the 14th anniversary of the crackdown on democracy protesters in Tiananmen Square, and some voiced fears that freedoms may crumble in Hong Kong.
Turning an urban park into a sea of candlelight, protesters sang patriotic songs and chanted, “Fight against the dictatorship,” in a blunt attack on China’s political system.
Some people worry that such protests will be harder to make after Hong Kong passes an anti-subversion bill, which is expected to happen in coming weeks.
Many protesters promised that they will keep fighting for democracy.
“If all of us who are here today insist to carry on with this dream, I don’t think the authorities can stop us,” said C.Y. Lee, a 40-year-old social worker.
The pending anti-subversion bill will carry life prison sentences for some crimes against the state.
