Terrorism Trial Delayed for Former Professor
A former University of South Florida professor accused of financing terrorism lost his bid for an immediate trial and could spend the next 18 months in jail before his case is heard.
Sami Al-Arian and three other men are accused of being fund-raisers and U.S. operatives of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which prosecutors say is a terrorist group. They will not go to trial until 2005, a U.S. judge decided.
Al-Arian’s lawyers sought an immediate trial, but his co-defendants’ attorneys wanted a delay to go through the evidence.
