Man Gets 16 Years for Oil Pipeline Shooting

A man who shot a hole through the trans-Alaska oil pipeline, causing it to leak more than 285,000 gallons of oil into the wilderness, was sentenced to 16 years in prison on state charges. Daniel Lewis was convicted of oil pollution and criminal mischief in December. Cleaning up the Oct. 4, 2001, spill cost more than $13 million.
Lewis’ older brother Randy testified during the trial that he saw Lewis shoot at the pipeline. Lewis has blamed his brother for the shooting.
