‘Mad Cow’ Tests on Cattle Are Negative

All tests on cattle linked to Canada’s lone case of “mad cow” disease were negative, investigators reported. Dr. Ulrich Kihm said his panel studying the situation would urge tighter surveillance and testing, because it was likely at least a few more cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy exist in North America.
Brian Evans, a Canadian food official, said 2,700 cattle were slaughtered for the investigation, with all tests coming back negative. Nine of 18 quarantined farms have been cleared to resume operations.
