From Times Wire Reports

Gunmen seized 60 people at a natural gas pipeline construction camp, but soldiers freed them after several hours, Peruvian Defense Minister Aurelio Loret de Mola said. He described the kidnappers as “armed criminals” but gave no details about how the hostages were freed.

Omar Quesada, the top official in the region, said the attackers had demanded a $1-million ransom.

The Argentine petroleum company Techint has been using the camp near Tocate, 220 miles southeast of Lima, the capital.
