From Times Staff and Wire Reports

AIDS will kill 70 million people worldwide by 2020 unless a vaccine is found, health authorities said. They recommended a crash program aimed at finding the best way to protect humans from HIV.

Writing in the journal Science, researchers proposed a network of centers to develop a vaccine to head off the exploding AIDS crisis.

In concept, said co-author Dr. David Baltimore, president of Caltech, the proposal is like a Manhattan Project against AIDS. Despite more than 20 years of effort, researchers have yet to find the ideal approach for fighting AIDS.
