Voters Go to Polls to Pick New Parliament

Syrians voted in the first parliamentary election since President Bashar Assad succeeded his father in 2000, and analysts said the new assembly could help speed up the pace of reform.
About 11 million of Syria’s 17 million people have the right to vote and are choosing 250 members of the People’s Assembly from 4,945 candidates, including 847 women. Voting ends today.
The elections are the first since Western-educated Assad introduced reforms, including a measure of political tolerance, to the socialist republic.
