Congolese rebels said 467 civilians were slain in an attack last week by pro-government soldiers, tribal militias and Ugandan army troops.

Thomas Lubanga, head of the Union of Congolese Patriots rebel group, said the killings occurred Monday and Tuesday at Bogoro, near the Ugandan border. Uganda has denied it had troops there.

“We had counted up to 467 people.... We’re still receiving more reports,” he said.

A U.N. official in Congo confirmed that an attack had taken place and said the death toll estimated by Lubanga “could be true.”
