Player Problems Again at Cincinnati

Backup forward Eugene Land quit Cincinnati’s basketball team Wednesday and backup center Rod Flowers was suspended indefinitely before an 87-70 victory over Alabama Birmingham.

Coach Bob Huggins said Land quit for personal reasons. He is the third Cincinnati player to quit this season -- reserves Eric Hicks and Tony Bobbitt also left the team for a few days, but were reinstated.

Huggins said Flowers’ suspension was for conduct detrimental to the team. He didn’t give specifics.

Land, a 6-foot-7 senior, missed two seasons while recovering from reconstructive knee surgery. He had played three or fewer minutes in six of the last seven games, and was averaging 1.1 points per game for the season.

Cincinnati is 17-9.

Wright State fired men’s coach Ed Schilling, saying he didn’t make enough progress with the program.

Schilling was 75-93 in six seasons as head coach and Wright State was 10-18 this season.

“Coach Schilling has brought many positive aspects to our program, but we do not feel it has developed to where we had hoped,” Athletic Director Michael Cusack said. “While we are disappointed in the progress of the program, we have developed an appreciation of Ed’s integrity, work ethic and values.”

Calvin Warner, Jacksonville’s leading scorer and rebounder, was suspended for violating an unspecified team policy, Coach Hugh Durham said. Jacksonville plays top-seeded Mercer in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament today.
