My Boston Gal to Try Again

Share

When she made her 3-year-old debut in the Davona Dale on Feb. 23, My Boston Gal did what every other horse trained by Carl Nafzger has done at Gulfstream Park.

The daughter of Boston Harbor lost. It was the first loss after three wins at Churchill Downs and Keeneland last year for My Boston Gal. For Nafzger, who is best remembered for winning a Kentucky Derby with Unbridled more than a decade ago, it was just another defeat during a forgettable meet.

The trainer lost with his first 46 starters at a Gulfstream season that began on Jan. 3, but he’ll try to end the drought with the aforementioned My Boston Gal and Westerly Breeze in today’s $200,000 Bonnie Miss.

A Grade II at 1 1/8 miles, the Bonnie Miss also attracted Ivanavinalot, who figures to be favored based upon her five wins in eight stars for owner-breeder Gilbert Campbell and trainer Kathy O’Connell.

Successful in five of six starts at Calder as a 2-year-old, Ivanavinalot has been second in her two races this year. John Velasquez will ride the filly for the first time this afternoon.

Race of the day: Singletary, who has disappointed in a pair of dirt races, will try to get back on track with the return to turf in today’s $75,000 Academy Road at Santa Anita.

Who’s hot: Robby Albarado. The jockey is winning with 21% of his mounts at the Fair Grounds and is the runaway leader in the standings.

Who’s not: Ken Shino. The jockey won with only three of his first 69 mounts at Oaklawn Park.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Kissing Girl, Sister Patricia and Que Facil Corazon in the second, singling I Can Cook in the third and using Square Dance, Throw Me Roses and Surf N Sand in the fourth.
