Readers Are Riled by Supervisors’ War Letter

Re “O.C. Supervisors Give Bush a Stamp of Approval,” March 7:

The Orange County Board of Supervisors unanimously decided to send a letter, rather than an official county resolution, supporting President Bush’s military policies, thereby avoiding potential opposition from the public. This behind-closed-doors action speaks volumes for the opinion that outside of getting elected, these supervisors would rather “not make a big deal” out of considering the public’s input as to such minor matters as war.

Elections are on the way for all levels of public service. Never have the voters in this county had greater reason to “make a big deal” about it, and vote out every incumbent on this board.

If the supervisors want to support war, that’s up to them. But when they do it behind closed doors and use county stationery, that is wrong, just as wrong as it would be for me to send a letter on county stationery to oppose or support the war.

Then they have the nerve to say they don’t want to bring county politics into foreign policy. What do you call this endorsement of war? Why don’t you guys stand up and be counted like Bush is asking the U.N. Security Council to do? Bring up the issue like the Los Angeles City Council did. Give the residents of Orange County both for and against a chance to express their views. Do not support the war in my name.

We are so proud of our heroes approving a war against Iraq. However, the story was incomplete. When the supervisors enlist in the military, do they want to go to Iraq as a group or will they be satisfied to fight the war individually?
