An overloaded ferry traveling between rebel-held ports in eastern Congo sank over the weekend in Lake Tanganyika, killing 111 people, officials said.

The M.V. Kashombwe sank Saturday en route from Kalemie to Uvira, 186 miles to the north, said Emil Ngoy, head of territorial administration for the rebel Congolese Rally for Democracy, which controls the lake ports.

Burundian sailors who patrol the lake rescued 41 and counted 111 bodies, said Burundian Col. Augustin Nzabampema.
