Ole, L.A. There’s no place like home

This actor was one of the hapless pair who spent a “Weekend at Bernie’s.” Silverman also was featured in the recent Showtime movie “Deacons for Defense” and stars in a stage play, “Turnaround.” He played against David Schwimmer until the drama was extended through Sunday at Coast Playhouse in West Hollywood. Mark Feuerstein (“Good Morning, Miami”) has the role for the rest of the run.

For starters

I’m a native of L.A. I’ve seen the city change and develop over time, and I still believe there’s no place like home. We [Angelenos] get a bad rap. People think we’re not much of a city, but we’ve got great beaches, beautiful people, the Clippers, the Kings, the Sparks, the Dodgers and the Lakers. What more do we need besides a pro football team?

Out on Fridays

Some Friday evenings after the show is over, I’ll head for Jones Hollywood on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. They’ve got this terrific grilled ahi tuna with spicy wasabi potatoes with long green beans. Irresistible.

A way down Santa Monica, there’s Dan Tana’s. They’ve got these massive steaks and killer martinis, though I rarely drink -- with my left hand.

The aftereffects

Saturday mornings I’ll wake up with a slight hangover. Remedy: a rigorous hike in the Los Feliz hills above Griffith Park. The views are spectacular.

Then I head for Victor’s Deli on Bronson. I’m not a giant breakfast person. But I’ll have a nice big cup of joe, scrambled eggs and some of their big, fat, famous pancakes right off the griddle.

Then I might spend a few hours at the L.A. County Museum or at the town’s new jewel, the Getty. There’s nothing so romantic as driving up Malibu, and just try Malibu Canyon Road -- the colors are so vivid..

On the small block on Franklin Boulevard near Beachwood Canyon, it’s very romantic and like a little piece of New York City. You can start with a glass of wine at this little French restaurant called La Poubelle where you can have a glass of wine, then head a few doors down to Prizzi’s Piazza. That place has the best garlic bread and pasta in town. Of course, the [Hollywood] Bowl season is absolutely the best. I go to classical concerts; then, when I feel like an old white man, I can get my James Taylor fix. And when I feel like salsa and reggae, they’ve got that too. It’s the best kind of weekend. Second only to a sports weekend.

Sports-perfect

The weekend that has the absolute best of everything might go something like this: Although I’ve been playing softball for a team in Brentwood for more than 11 years, I love to get in 18 holes of golf, if possible. Then if I can catch a Dodgers game in the same day and can get down the road to Staples for the Lakers tipoff, and if both teams win, it calls for a celebration.

Family ties

My family knows how to celebrate. We head down to El Cholo on Western near Pico. You grab a quick margarita, with no salt. If it’s between May and October, we order the green corn tamales. Now this is the way to celebrate!
