A powerful spring storm is expected to sweep into the Southland today, dropping as much as 2 inches of rain on downtown Los Angeles, 5 inches in the foothills and a foot of snow in the higher mountains before skies start clearing Sunday.

The National Weather Service said the rain should start falling in the San Fernando Valley by midafternoon, spreading throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties by nightfall. Forecasters said the rain probably will be heavy at times, accompanied by gusty winds. There is a possibility of a few thundershowers.

The storm should be relatively warm, with a snow level in the mountains of about 7,000 feet. That means most mountain roads in Southern California shouldn’t be affected, but the weather service issued a warning that fog and heavy snow could make driving dangerous on secondary roads above 6,500 feet.

Forecasters said the rain and snow should continue, off and on, through much of Saturday, tapering off at sundown.

Sunday should be partly cloudy, cool and mostly dry, except for a few lingering mountain snow showers.
