Balzar’s Columns Will Be Missed

Share

John Balzar’s final column, “Shouting and Stone Deaf” (May 4), is a perfect example of why I’ve been his admirer since his first piece appeared on the Commentary page. His oblique approach to important issues always makes me think. Whether I say to myself “Right on!” or “Hey, where’s he coming from?” I can’t dismiss his views, and often he forces me to reevaluate my own views.

In the media world, where sensationalism and hyperbole run rampant, Balzar’s anger at stupidity and injustice finds its voice in writing that is dignified, clever, sometimes poetic, but never strident or pretentious. Above all, I love the man’s humanity. I’m going to miss his commentaries, but I look forward to reading whatever his new assignment will bring us.
