From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The U.S. should create a central repository for human embryonic stem cells, wrote a group of leading stem cell researchers in Friday’s issue of Science. This would make it easier for scientists to obtain the cells and also would permit their careful study.

Stem cells, obtained from early human embryos, can become many tissues and hold promise for treating diseases such as diabetes.

Only existing stem cell lines can be used for government-funded research.
