Faced with a $147-million budget deficit, the Board of Education cut 412 jobs from San Diego city schools, including 189 teaching assistant positions and non-teaching jobs such as secretaries and cooks.

The board approved the cuts Monday on a 3-2 vote despite appeals from dozens of employees who asked that their jobs be spared.

The board also voted to reduce hours for 211 jobs, including 168 teaching assistants.
