Iran’s President Denounces Terrorist Bombings
Iranian President Mohammad Khatami on Wednesday condemned the terrorist bombings in Saudi Arabia and said that despite “important and big” differences with Washington, the recently disclosed U.S.-Iranian talks in Geneva would continue.
The attack on compounds housing Western civilians in Saudi Arabia “by any person or party and for whatever goal is condemned,” Khatami told reporters at a news conference here. He said he had sent Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah a condolence telegram.
Such attacks provide “pretext for those who want to impose wars on people,” Khatami said.
On Iraq, Khatami told reporters that Iran opposes the creation of a government there dominated by a specific sect.
Khatami flew later Wednesday to Syria, where the official Syrian Arab News Agency reported that Damascus also condemned the bombings in Saudi Arabia as “a sinful terrorist act.”
Responding to U.S. pressure on Syria and Lebanon to disarm the militant group Hezbollah, he linked the disarmament to the elimination of Israel’s weapons of mass destruction.
