U.S. Drops Objection to Anti-Smoking Treaty

The United States said it would support a global anti-smoking treaty, startling observers by dropping its objections. “I’m going to support it,” Health Secretary Tommy Thompson said on the eve of the Geneva-based World Health Organization’s annual assembly.
The U.S. and Germany had opposed a clause that would halt advertising. Thompson stopped short of saying the United States would ratify the pact. President Bush had not yet reviewed the text with his lawyers, he said.
