Liberals and Socialists Aim to Form Coalition

Free-market liberals and socialists moved to form a new government in Belgium after a resounding election victory gave them a mandate to continue economic reforms and tax cuts.

The win returns to office Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt, whose center-left coalition in the last four years has pursued such controversial social policies as legalizing gay marriage, euthanasia and marijuana.

Despite the strong support for Verhofstadt’s coalition, the anti-immigration Flemish Bloc also made substantial gains.
