Lawmakers Urge Democratic Reforms

A letter signed by 127 reformist lawmakers called on Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to accept democratic reforms or put the government’s survival at risk. The letter named the Guardian Council, which has been vetoing pro-democracy bills, as posing the “biggest obstacle” to the elected 290-member Parliament. Khamenei picks the council members.
The letter said political killings, imprisonment and rejection of all pro-reform legislation have made elections “meaningless.”
