Twelve more Taiwanese have died of SARS, but the number of new infections fell to three, the government said today.

New deaths from severe acute respiratory syndrome were reported for the first time in three days, pushing Taiwan’s toll to 72, health officials said. Officials did not give details on the new deaths.

The new infections were the lowest since the island’s first hospital outbreak in April.

In Canada, Toronto hospital workers once again donned masks and gowns Saturday to confront a possible new SARS outbreak that officials said involved at least 31 suspected cases.

At least 500 people possibly exposed were told to quarantine themselves at home for 10 days as a precaution, Canadian health officials said.

The World Health Organization confirmed one new case but said more confirmation of an outbreak was needed before it would consider a travel warning for Toronto. U.S. health officials issued such a warning Friday.

Two of the suspected new Toronto cases involved elderly patients who died recently. If confirmed, they would raise the death toll in the area to 26.

A formal definition of a probable SARS case requires a link to a known SARS case, and that has yet to be established.
