From Times Wire Reports

The U.S. government urged Americans to leave Liberia as two rebel groups pressed toward the capital. While a State Department warning noted fighting in the country “could expand ... without warning,” authorities said that the move was not an evacuation and that the U.S. Embassy remained open.

Rebels in the north are waging an increasingly aggressive campaign against the government. In recent weeks, a second rebel group has started pressing in from the border with Ivory Coast. Peace talks are set for next week.
