Seattle SuperSonic guard Ray Allen will be out six to eight weeks after successful arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle.

The surgery, the first of the 28-year-old Allen’s career, was performed by Dr. Richard Ferkel in Los Angeles.

A team news release didn’t specify whether doctors removed a bone chip, damaged ligament or other debris. Allen told reporters before the procedure that doctors didn’t know exactly what was lodged inside his ankle.

Allen went on the injured list Oct. 27 and didn’t travel with the team for its season-opening series in Japan against the Clippers. He’s expected to attend Seattle’s home opener against Portland on Friday.

Allen averaged 24.5 points in 29 games for the SuperSonics last season after being acquired in a blockbuster trade that sent Gary Payton, the franchise’s all-time leading scorer but now with the Lakers, to Milwaukee.

Atlanta Hawk guard Jason Terry was suspended by the NBA for one game without pay because of an elbow he delivered to Indiana’s Anthony Johnson during a loss to the Pacers.

Terry will sit out Atlanta’s game against New Orleans tonight.

Johnson made a tiebreaking three-point basket with 22.6 seconds left in overtime Saturday night, then tied up Terry for an apparent jump ball. Frustrated, Terry swung his left elbow at Johnson, grazing his chin.

The officials tossed Terry from the game.

Kenyon Martin’s ankle injury isn’t a bad as originally feared, and the New Jersey Net forward could return as early as this week. Martin sprained his left ankle in an ugly fall in Friday night’s home victory over Minnesota. X-rays were negative.
