From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Scientists this week published the first protein map of a complex organism, moving beyond simple charts showing what the genetic code looks like toward a guide showing what an animal’s genes actually do.

A map of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, containing more than 7,000 proteins, appeared in the online version of the journal Science.

Genes are merely instructions for cells. To use genetic information for medical treatments, scientists must understand the proteins controlled by genes.
