First, Check the Mirror

Need we remind letter writer Paul Giorgi (“Some Would Write Off a South That Loves GOP,” Nov. 19) that the “retrograde mind-set” he tries to tar the South with was overwhelmingly Democrat for generations, at least until the Reagan revolution? But before he goes whimpering about how “the South is an anchor dragging the rest of the country down,” he’d better wake up and realize that no matter how hard he tries to transfer his party’s failings, it is California that is an “anchor” -- with a deficit that was larger, at one point recently, than the other states’ deficits combined.

Californians just got rid of one reason for that particular anchor. Perhaps Giorgi would care to help us get rid of the rest.
