Singapore’s new policy on films
The Singapore government said Wednesday that movie distributors can now release different versions of the same picture there -- allowing Singaporeans to see more films without censors’ cuts.
Distributors were previously forced to screen only one version of a film. This system meant choosing between censored versions for wide release or preserving the original film without cuts but sacrificing the youth audience.
The government regularly censors films, TV programs and music compact discs. It snipped a lesbian kissing scene from Nicole Kidman’s movie “The Hours” and threw out a nude scene in the award-winning “Titanic.”
The new rules could allow “Titanic” to be screened first with the nude scene and a rating that bars people younger than 21 from seeing the film. After distributors withdraw a film from cinemas, they would be required to wait a week before releasing a different version.
