Joan Perucho, 82; Award-Winning Spanish Author

Joan Perucho, author of the successful 1960 novel “Natural History,” has died at the age of 82, news reports said Thursday.

Perucho died Tuesday at his home in his native Barcelona of cirrhosis of the liver, said the daily La Vanguardia, for which he wrote regularly.

Perucho was awarded Spain’s National Letters Prize in 2002. Using Catalan, his native language, he wrote poetry, short stories, science fiction, journalism and art criticism.

He first drew attention in the literary world with the collection of poems “Sota La Sang” (“Under the Blood”) in 1947. In 1956, he published the fantasy story “Amb Tecnica de Lovecraft” (“With Lovecraft’s Technique”).

His first novel, “Llibre de Cavalleries” (“The Book of Chivalry”) in 1957, was translated into several languages.

Translation of his 1960 novel on vampires “Les Histories Naturals” (“Natural History”) gained him international recognition and praise.
