India Detains 4 in Deadly Bombings

Police have detained four people, including an 18-year-old woman and her parents, over last week’s bombings that killed 52 people and injured more than 150 others here in the country’s financial capital, officials said Monday.

In addition to the Bombay blasts, the four are accused of having a role in a July 28 bus bombing that killed three and wounded 31.

Maharashtra state Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said police suspected the four of being members of the Pakistan-based Kashmiri Muslim rebel group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Bhujbal said police found more than 200 sticks of explosives, detonators and alarm clocks when they detained the four.

It is unclear when they were picked up. Bhujbal said the four were detained after a taxi driver tipped off police.

On Monday, three of the suspects -- Arshad Ansari, 26; Fahimida Syed Mohammed Hanif, 37; and her 18-year-old daughter, Farheen Rahim, appeared in court in Bombay.

Hanif’s husband, Syed Rahim, 45, is hospitalized with high blood pressure.

Although many Muslims died in last week’s blasts, the government believes the attacks could be linked to religious riots in western Gujarat state last year. More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed after Muslims set a train on fire and killed 60 Hindus.
