Evaluate a homeowners association by its reserves

Regarding “Ownership Has Its Privileges” by Jeff Bertolucci, Aug. 17: While monthly assessments are certainly based to a certain extent on amenities, this ignores the fact that homeowners should consider how much their associations are spending on management, maintenance, repair and contribution to reserves. An association that has built up significant reserves is certainly a better asset than one that has not.
