More on Why We Keep So Much ‘Stuff’

Share

Thank you for the article on storage units and the American epidemic of keeping everything (“Psychology by the Square Foot,” by Victoria Clayton, Aug. 10). As a professional organizer, I spend many days de-cluttering and reminding people that “you can’t take it with you” and that memories are within us, not our objects. We often get so close to “our stuff” that we lose perspective of its relevance to our lives. Does it reflect who we are today, or is it simply reanimating “our history”? Like any addiction, clutter may fill a hole temporarily, but it eventually stifles creativity and suffocates us.
