From Times Wire Reports

A general strike called by Maoist rebels paralyzed life in this Himalayan kingdom despite government assurances of heightened security to deter attacks by the guerrillas.

Many residents throughout the country kept their businesses shut and their vehicles off the streets while communities closed schools for fear of attack by the rebels, who are known to be ruthless against those who defy their strike calls.

Police said there were no immediate reports of any rebel attacks today, the first day of the three-day general strike, called by the rebels to show their strength.
