The hanging of a black man in Belle Glade that raised questions of a lynching was a suicide, state investigators concluded.

Feraris “Ray” Golden was found hanging from a tree May 28. Police and the medical examiner reported finding no signs of a struggle, but rumors in the rural town persisted that he had been lynched.

The state Department of Law Enforcement said there was no evidence that Golden’s death was caused by something other than suicide.

State Rep. James Harper, who had requested the inquiry, said he questioned the findings and still wanted a more thorough investigation.
