Teen Accused of Plotting a Rampage Is Sentenced
A teenager accused of plotting a shooting rampage was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Matthew Lovett, who had faced up to 50 years in prison for weapons charges and conspiracy to commit murder, agreed to plead guilty to carjacking charges tied to his plan, which he said was “a stupid idea” and “more fantasy than anything.”
On July 6, 2003, Lovett and two friends tried to carjack a motorist in the Philadelphia suburb of Oaklyn, N.J.
Lovett, then 18, and his friends, aged 13 and 14, were arrested while carrying six guns and 2,000 rounds of ammunition. Police later seized evidence that revealed a plan “to kill people right and left.”
