Housing Problems Pinch the Coin of This Realm

“L.A. Plans to Reduce Rental Aid for the Poor” (April 6), about rent vouchers being cut, and “County Homeless Shelters Can’t Find Homes” (April 5), about homeless shelters having difficulty finding buildings in neighborhoods where residents are apparently opposed to an organization taking in human beings who are down on their luck, remind me of the extent to which we’re becoming a more self-centered society.
Perhaps instead of conservationist John Muir and the beautiful vista that have been minted on the commemorative California quarter, a more apropos design could be stamped. It could show a Hummer driving toward the right side of the coin, with the driver’s cellphone in hand and to his ear, with the image of a more destitute-looking person in a wheelchair superimposed over the huge Hummer and moving toward the left side of the coin in the opposite direction. And a couple of palm trees in the background for atmosphere.
