Jerome Lobel, 75; Fought Construction of Dams in Grand Canyon
Jerome Lobel, 75, an Arizona environmentalist who fought to prevent construction of two dams in the Grand Canyon, died Wednesday in a rollover traffic accident in Missouri, police said.
A graduate of UCLA, Lobel became a computer security analyst. He was also an avid hiker, and in 1965 he helped found the Grand Canyon Chapter of the Sierra Club to protect the canyon’s environment.
Lobel was particularly concerned about damage to his favorite hiking areas when two separate dams were proposed for sections of the canyon. Working with other environmentalists, he was successful in halting the projects.
