Controversial Media Bill Wins Senate OK

A bitterly contested media bill received final approval in Italy’s Senate, despite opposition claims that it was tailor-made for Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s business empire.
President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi vetoed the first version of the bill in December, saying it could lead to single companies dominating the Italian media.
The center-left opposition says that changes to the bill do little to address Ciampi’s concerns. Conservatives argue that it makes media more competitive.
