Although the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team began its exhibition season with a 96-71 victory over Puerto Rico on Saturday at Jacksonville, Fla., the most intriguing move came from Coach Larry Brown.

The coach of the NBA’s Detroit Pistons benched Allen Iverson, LeBron James and Amare Stoudemire for showing up late to a pregame meeting, a move that rekindled memories of the six contentious seasons Brown and Iverson spent at Philadelphia when Brown coached the 76ers.

“They broke a team rule and we are a team,” Brown said. “They paid the penalty. Nobody wanted to embarrass them, and now we’re moving on.”

Brown and Iverson frequently feuded while with the 76ers but they claimed to have patched up things when Brown left after the 2003 season. But in their first significant reunion, there was trouble.

“I’m the captain on the team and to be suspended just for being a couple minutes late just doesn’t sit well for me,” Iverson said. “I’m supposed to be one of the leaders of the team, and this is not a good look.”

Iverson, James and Stoudemire watched the game from the bench.

Carmelo Anthony and Carlos Boozer led the U.S. with 16 points each, and Tim Duncan finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
